Making the home safe for
children
Child proofing installations
can be easy or hard depending on the products or tools at hand. It also
depends on how much time you feel is reasonable to spend on installing
products like gates and locks, as well as making fireplaces and corners
of furniture safe for children.
For the installation of various products, it’s a good idea to
have the basic tool set of screwdrivers, Phillips screwdriver, a pair
of pliers, scissors, a measuring tape, and a little patience and focused
determination.
Tools for getting stuff installed
I’m going to digress for just a moment. I want you to know about
this great tool that if you do not own it, get it now from your local
hardware store. If you don’t own a Skil Twist power screwdriver,
you are doing things the hard way! The exact product you need is called,
Skil 2211-01 Skil Super Twist Screwdriver with Flexi-Charge. This product
is easy to handle and use. I can’t imagine a household without
it. If you ever bought furniture or toys that needed assembly you have
been putting them together the hard way if you didn’t use the Skil
Super Twist to put it together. It makes dealing with screws light and
effortless.
About Child Proofing Products
While many of these child safety products are easy to install, there
are some that might be a little challenging because of less than good
documentation. This is exactly what we faced when installing the Magnetic
Tot Loc Four Lock Assembly by Safety 1st. Safety 1st is the leading manufacturer
of products for making the home child proof.
We prefer using their ingenious
locks and gadgets over other makers. But the instructions on this product
could have been clearer. Nevertheless, we had a fairly easy time of it.
We highly recommend the Tot Loc because it is less easily defeated than
competing brands. It costs just a wee bit more than the standard hook/lock
mechanisms, but the cost saving is about as much as you’d pay for
a burger and fries, and most parents regard their child’s safety
more highly than that. Go for the Tot Lock.
More good ideas for a safer home
Although there are many fine products for creating a safe environment
for your child, there are other things that require your attention. For
that we recommend a fine book like Baby Proofing Basics 2 Ed: How To
Keep Your Child Safe. This books will tell you how to child proof your
fireplace (Remove the gas key to a gas fireplace and put it safely away
so your child can't accidentally start a fire...”)
Baby proofing your home doesn’t have to be a chore; it’s
something you and your spouse or a friend can do together. Have someone
come over to watch the kid while you go about the house attaching safety
latches and new electrical outlets. Please continue reading, we have
many more consumer reviews about child proofing essentials, including
how to child proof corners, your computer, windows, locks and gates,
among many other topics. Welcome to Parentnoia! |
