Baby safety is highly important to todays parents. More is known about the kinds of things that can cause a negative impact to the child's health and well being. Considerations such as lead paint, cigarette smoke, whether a baby crib poses no danger or has been the subject of a recall, and keeping the air filtered, clean and mold-free are just some of the leading issues confronting the parent who wishes to keep their healthy and without injury.

Join us as we consider all these concerns and determine what you can do as a parent to choose wisely and come to a decision on what items you want to bring into your home... and what is better kept out of it.

There are a surprising amount of dangers lurking. For instance, something as innocuous as a toy ring (manufactured in India) was recently found to contain enormous amounts of lead, with one child in the Pacific Northwest ingesting enough lead to poison himself, necessitating a trip to the intensive care unit. Inspecting every toy and garment that comes through your door is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other considerations when it comes to the safety of your child.

Products by Saftey 1st are among the most popular for protecting ones children from harm. It doesn't take a baby safety month for parents to get themselves online to research everything they can do to protect their babies.

Baby Crib
So why not start with the baby crib? Rule number one: Never ever accept as a gift or purchase second hand a used baby crib. You have no way of knowing if the item has been the subject of a product recall, and thus mortally dangerous to your infant. There are cribs that have been recalled because an infants head can become trapped in the crib, causing them to lose consciousness and the consequences that come from not being able to breathe- or just as bad, permanent brain damage.

Please, don't subject your child to this fate just to save a few bucks or please your parents who want you to use your own crib from when you were a child. Don't do it. A crib is too important, always purchase a crib brand new and feel good about putting your child to sleep in it knowing that you did your best to find the safest crib available. Remember that over 50,000 infants are taken to hospitals every year in the United States because of injuries sustained while using second hand infant furniture such as baby cribs. Don't let your child become another statistic. Keep them safe by purchasing safe cribs

Nevertheless, your infant may still be in danger if the crib contains any loose or missing parts. Even if the crib is brand new, if it has not been put together tightly, it holds the potential for becoming a mortal danger to the child. Always do a check-up to make sure nothing has become loose. Infants have a tendency to grab hold of the sides and shake things up. We will have more information about baby crib safety available soon.

Living Areas of the Home
Not many people are aware that the home can accumulate unhealthy levels of carbon monoxide. The sources of carbon monoxide can come from ordinary household appliances like gas stoves, furnaces, and even a fireplace. One thing that makes carbon monoxide especially deadly is that it is colorless and odorless. Your kitchen stove may be emitting dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, endangering the health and safety of you and your child without any indication that something may be wrong. Because carbon monoxide is odorless, and common appliances in the home can produce it, unless you have a carbon monoxide detector, you will never know the danger you may be in.

Fortunately there are models of smoke detectors that come integrated with carbon dioxide detectors. As you should have smoke detectors in your home anyway, all you have to do is purchase one of the models that come integrated with the CO monitors. No home should be without these detectors, order yours right away.

In the bedroom
It is recommended by doctors that infants always be put to sleep on their backs or side on a firm and flat mattress pad, one that has no soft type of bedding beneath it. Always keep the crib away from windows, especially from windows that have cords or straps that can entangle them and cause a choking hazard, as well as the danger from actually falling out of the window, or an animal coming in from the window and harming the baby.

Water safety
Always check the bathwater with a digital thermometer. If you do not own a digital thermometer, then purchase one immediately. You are going to need it. Make sure that the temperature of the bathwater never exceeds 100 degrees farenheight. Never leave your infant alone when they are in the water. In fact, never leave a baby alone when they are anywhere near water such as in a toilet, a bath, a faucet, or a bucket. Indeed, most parents tend to never leave a child alone except when they are asleep, but always be doubly careful around water.
