Sony manufactures two products designed for use as baby monitors. The two products are very similar and only separated by a ten dollar price difference. While there are many similarities between the two, the differences boil down to one of convenience. The model that we prefer features 27 channels, while the other one only has nine. We'll explain the benefits of the channels later in this product review. The other difference is that the model with 27 channels has recharchable batteries built in, while the other one does not. If you have your own rechargeable batteries and don't mind having to remove the batteries to recharge them every other day, then go ahead and buy the cheaper version. We feel that life's too short to add yet another minor consideration to our lives when there are many vastly more important things to think about than whether we recharged a battery or not. We recommend you spring for the model that costs ten dollars more and proceed with one less thing to fret over. So the deal with the Sony Baby Call Monitor is it's made up of two parts, the monitor and the receiver. The monitor operates on the 900 mhz radio frequency, the same as the average cordless telephone, but well under the 2.4 Ghz frequency of home Wi-Fi signals and telephones. What this means in English is that the baby monitor will not interfere with your home wireless internet network, that's the good news. The bad news is that if you live in a condo complex or an apartment building, there is a possibility that the receiver may pick up your neighbors phone conversations. Fortunately this model of Sony baby monitor has a whopping twenty seven frequency channels you can switch between to tune out chatty neighbors. No other baby monitor that we are aware of has this nifty option which, together with the rechargeable battery within the receiver makes it head and shoulders better than many other baby monitors on the market. We tested this monitor inside of an older apartment complex with wood between the ceilings and floors and the phone signals from neighbors tended to interfere until we switched the channels and the yacking conversations went away. We then tested it inside a more modern building with cement and steel between the individual units and never heard a peep from the neighbors. Not once over the course of several months of testing it did we experience signal interference from cordless telephones. It's our conclusion that this isn't an issue unless you are living in a crowded older building, in which case you have recourse to the channels to tune out the interference. The Sony Baby Call has a noise cancelling filter that is absolutely amazing. It will basically filter out ambient noise and pick up the movements of your baby from out of the noise or silence. For instance, we tested it on a baby who enjoyed sleeping with light music in the background. We set the baby monitor on the quiet mode and it remained quiet until she started shifting around in the crib. This is a great feature that is not found in many models and takes this baby monitor to the top of our short list of monitors for all parents to try. This is a popular model, so don't be discouraged if you don't find it on store shelves, as they tend to fly out the door as soon as they are stocked- they are that popular, mostly from word of mouth recommendation. |
